Trading Cards Hit Record June Spend as Market Enthusiasm Soars

In the exhilarating world of trading cards, June 2025 will be remembered as a legendary moment when the industry leaped beyond expectations, setting a new benchmark at an astounding $305 million in spending. This isn’t just a whimsical fluke; it’s a robust sign of a burgeoning hobby that continues to captivate new enthusiasts and seasoned collectors alike. According to analytics firm Card Ladder, this month has not only broken records but also seemingly engaged a turbocharger on the industry’s growth engine.

Surpassing the previous high of March’s $303.22 million, June’s numbers are still vibrant with the potential for upward revision as additional stats trickle in. It’s as though the trading card market was trying to outdo itself, each financial figure a new playing card slapped down with the triumphant satisfaction of a royal flush.

The driving force behind this colossal spending spree? Enter eBay, the goliath of online marketplaces, orchestrating a spectacular performance by itself accounting for a staggering $245 million of the total sales. Their platform facilitated millions of collectors and traders in exchanging cardboard treasures with the glee and fervor of a child opening packs on Christmas morning.

Goldin Auctions, another big player with a reputation for rare and high-end items, provided $32 million towards this impressive figure. Not to be outdone, Fanatics Collect also threw its hat into the ring, contributing a significant $27 million in sales. Collectively, these heavy hitters propelled June to greatness, logging 5.2 million transactions—the second-highest count ever recorded on Card Ladder, a statistical dashboard keeping a finger on the pulse of this dynamic market.

Of course, statistics aside, nothing speaks louder than the resounding success stories of individual sales. June’s crown jewel was unearthed at Goldin Auctions: a 2009-10 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Dual NBA Logoman card. Featuring the indomitable LeBron James alongside the immortal Kobe Bryant, this exclusive piece fetched a crisp $1.16 million. This card was not just ink and imagery but a fabric of history, tying together two NBA legends on cardboard canvas.

While this sought-after card was the only one to break the seven-figure sound barrier, the high-end market didn’t shy away from flexing its muscles. Six cards swirled into the hands of eager collectors for over half a million dollars each, 68 nabbed over $100,000, and an impressive 239 were peeled off at north of $50,000, further testifying to the robust interest fueling the market for premium rarities.

Grading, a crucial cog in the trading card machine, saw unprecedented activity as well. According to GemRate, 12.4 million cards have been graded in 2025 thus far—a testament to the meticulous nature and evolving tastes of modern collectors. A 25% increase over last year, this surge is largely fueled by the fascination with Pokémon, the reigning monarch of trading cards. Almost dominating the list, 97 of the top 100 most graded cards at PSA in 2025 hailed from this iconic franchise. Like the evolved creatures they depict, Pokémon cards have grown and adapted, taking the TCG world by storm, a whirlwind of nostalgia and new fanhood.

The record-setting month punctuates a dynamic first half of 2025 for trading card enthusiasts, cementing a season enthusiastic about pushing boundaries. This isn’t just a niche interest sliding under the radar; it’s a booming business replete with the vibrancy of high-end sales, the mass appeal of Pokémon, and the clamor of millions participating through platforms like eBay. Trading cards have waltzed out from dusty childhood shoeboxes into the glare of mainstream attention.

Each sale is a story, each card a gateway between generations and a symbol of an ever-expanding universe. As the hobby continues to gather momentum, trading cards aren’t just surviving; they’re thriving – and doing so in the most spectacular fashion possible. Reading the landscape of 2025, it’s clear that this passion project has transformed into a cultural touchstone with potentially the highest ceiling it has ever boasted. Looking to the future, this seems not the pinnacle but the dawn of new possibilities, as collectors and enthusiasts ride this wave of excitement into July and beyond.
